It's May. Is your boat ready?

A picture of many different boats anchored on Lake Erie on a beautiful sunny day

The lake is calling, the islands are waiting, and that to-do list won't check itself.

"There's no better time to be on Lake Erie than right now."

Every year, when the calendar flips to May, something shifts in the air around here. The frost is gone, the days are getting long, and if you listen carefully on a warm afternoon, you might hear the sound of boat engines turning over in driveways up and down the shoreline. It's officially boat-in-the-water season on Lake Erie, and honestly, it's our favorite time of year.

Whether you're dreaming of a lazy afternoon north of Kelleys Island, a weekend docking at Put-in-Bay, or just finally hanging with friends somewhere beyond the breakwall, May is the month when it all starts. The lake wakes up, the marinas buzz to life, and the whole north coast of Ohio remembers exactly why we live here.

But before you back that trailer down the ramp and let her rip, take a breath. A few minutes of prep now can save you a very soggy, very stressful afternoon out there. Trust us. The islands aren't going anywhere. The checklist, though? That one matters.

Why May is magical on Lake Erie

There's a reason seasoned boaters will tell you May is the sweet spot. The summer crowds haven't fully arrived yet. The water is refreshing without being punishing. The sunsets are long and golden, and the ferry lines to the islands are still manageable....for now. This window, this beautiful stretch between "too cold" and "too crowded," is what we're all here for.

This is also the time of year when Lake Erie Clothing was practically built. We're a north coast brand, through and through. We know what it means to zip up a hoodie on a damp May morning at the dock, to squint into the afternoon sun somewhere past the Islands, to pull on a hat that doesn't fly off every time the boat picks up speed. Our clothes are made for this life.

So yeah... go. Get out there. But first, let's talk about that checklist.

Pre-launch checklist: before you chase the horizon

Tap the boxes as you go. Don't skip the boring ones. Those are usually the ones that matter most when you're three miles out.

One last thing before you untie those dock lines: check the weather. Lake Erie is fast-moving. Conditions can change in under an hour, especially in May when warm fronts still battle cold air off the water. The NOAA marine forecast is your friend — bookmark it on your phone now.

Now go. The islands are waiting.

You've done the work. The boat's ready. The sun is out, or it will be. Check out Kelleys Island, Put-in-Bay (South Bass), Middle Bass, and North Bass. There are many islands out there just sitting in Lake Erie, waiting for you to find your favorite spot.

Grab your Lake Erie Clothing gear — something you can layer for the cool morning run out and strip back when the afternoon gets warm. Pack a cooler. Don't forget sunscreen, because the lake reflects everything, and you will absolutely get burned without realizing it. And then just go enjoy the lake you live next to.

This is what May is for.

From all of us at Lake Erie Clothing — here's to a safe, sun-soaked season on the water. See you out there. 🌊
