May on the Marsh: Ohio's Wildest Bird Show

Every spring, something magical happens - right here in our backyard - and you don't need to be a hardcore birder to love it.

🐦

The Warbler Capital of the World — and it's in Ohio.

Northwest Ohio's Lake Erie shoreline has earned that title, and every May, birders from around the globe show up to prove it. Daily tallies of 120+ species are common. You might not even need binoculars.

If you've spent any time along the Lake Erie shore in spring, you've probably noticed things get a little… livelier. The trees start filling with tiny, bright bursts of color, the air is full of a song you can't quite place, and suddenly there are people in wide-brimmed hats staring into the treetops at 7 am. Welcome to warbler season.

This stretch of Northwest Ohio coastline — right in our home territory — has been dubbed the Warbler Capital of the World, and it's not just a cute nickname. Every spring, warblers and other migratory songbirds travel thousands of miles from the tropics on their way to breeding grounds in Canada. When they hit Lake Erie, they've got a big decision to make: rest and refuel, or cross the open water. Lucky for us, they usually pick the first option — and they do it right here.

What makes this spot so special? The trees along the lakeshore leaf out later than they do inland, so birds are out in the open, feeding, low to the ground, and easy to see. Even first-timers walk away absolutely blown away.

Styling Tips for Your Trip

Building a wardrobe around coastal adventure clothing is fun and easy. I like to keep things simple and practical. Here are some styling tips I use:

  1. Start with the basics: our soft tees celebrating the Warbler, comfortable pants/shorts, and a good jacket.

  2. Mix textures. Pair soft cotton with rugged denim or waterproof fabrics.

  3. Choose accessories wisely. Sunglasses, hats, backpacks, and don't forget your binoculars,

  4. Keep footwear practical. Waterproof shoes or sandals with a good grip.

There's something deeply Lake Erie about all of this — the birds following the shoreline, fueling up before a big crossing, doing their thing against a backdrop of open water and big sky. It's the same energy we try to capture in everything we make. Wild, unhurried, and unmistakably ours.

So grab your binoculars, your coffee, and your favorite Lake Erie Clothing Co. layer — and go see what's in the trees this May.

The Biggest Week in American Birding

Every May, the region hosts The Biggest Week in American Birding — a 10-day festival right here in northwest Ohio. It's part scientific celebration, part community party, and completely worth planning a trip around. We're talking guided birding walks, workshops, canoe trips, keynote speakers, a birder's marketplace, and yes — Birder Social Events.

Whether you've been birding for decades or you're just curious what all the binocular-toting strangers are looking at, this festival has room for you.
