Hey, I'm Niccole. Welcome to Fresh Water, Fresh Drops, the blog where I talk about all things Lake Erie: the festivals, the hidden gems, and the lake life that makes living up here on Ohio's north coast so special. Grab a coffee. Let's dive into pirate season!
Because yes, pirate season is a thing here. And it is absolutely as fun as it sounds.

Lake Erie Does Pirates Differently
If you've never been to one of the Lake Erie pirate festivals, you need to put it on your list right now. Seriously. Both Port Clinton and Put-in-Bay go full pirate every year in June and July. The energy is something you really have to experience to believe. Costumes, cannons, live music, rum, and boats everywhere: it’s one of those weekends where you look around and think, "How did I not know about this sooner?"
I grew up coming to this lake and these islands. I still get excited every single year when pirate season rolls around. There’s just nothing else like it.
Port Clinton Pirate Fest (July 24–26, 2026)
Port Clinton is the gateway to the Lake Erie islands. This summer, it will transform into something out of a storybook. The waterfront fills up with pirates, vendors, live entertainment, and more rum drinks than you probably need (but will definitely have anyway).
It's a great starting point if you're making a full island weekend out of it. Come in through Port Clinton, catch the festival, then hop the ferry over to Put-in-Bay. That’s honestly the move.
Put-in-Bay Pyrate Fest (June 26–28, 2026)
Put-in-Bay does everything big, and Pyrate Fest is no exception. The island fills up with costumed crews. The bars are packed, the docks are lined with boats, and the whole place has this electric summer energy that’s hard to describe if you haven’t felt it.
If you've been to Put-in-Bay before, you already know it has its own vibe completely. Add pirates to that, and it’s a whole thing.
What to Wear
Okay, I’m a little biased here, but hear me out. A good festival tee goes a long way. You want something comfortable, something that says you’re there for a good time, and honestly, something that looks good in photos because you WILL be taking photos.
We designed our Black Flags & Rum tee specifically for these weekends. It features a Pirate Peak skull on the front and a big bold jolly roger flag on the back. It comes in white and charcoal, and it is genuinely one of my favorite things we've made. If you're going to either festival this summer, this is the one.
A Few Practical Tips
Book Early
I cannot stress this enough. Lodging around Port Clinton and on the islands fills up fast once festival season approaches. If you're thinking about going, start looking now.
Bring Cash
Some vendors are card-only, but plenty are not. You don’t want to be hunting for an ATM when there’s a rum drink with your name on it.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
You're going to be walking, dancing, and probably standing on a boat at some point. This is not the weekend for cute sandals that hurt after an hour. (Ask me how I know.)
Take the Ferry
If you're going to Put-in-Bay, just take the ferry. Parking on the island is a whole situation, and the ferry ride across the lake is genuinely one of the best parts of the trip.
One More Thing
If you've never spent a summer weekend on Lake Erie, I really hope this is the year you do. It is so underrated. The water, the islands, the people, the sunsets: this lake has a way of getting under your skin in the best possible way.
That’s kind of why I started Lake Erie Clothing Company. I wanted to create things that felt like this place. That felt like the lake. And pirate season? That’s Lake Erie at its most fun.
See you out there!
